The Saint Joseph Seminary has once again brought home the Overall Championship Trophy at the 43rd Hearts on Fire: Abra Gospel Festival themed “Forgiveness and Peace” on February 24, 2024, held at the Divine Word College of Bangued.
In the songwriting category, SJS shone with Sem. Mark Rainniel M. Daguiomen’s "Annakkayo, Ay-Ayatenkayo" clinching first place, while Chorus Josephi's "You Are There" secured the second spot. The essay-writing competition saw Sem. Scott T. Keruvym Claveria achieve third place with his thought-provoking entry, “The Manifestation of Violence in the Context of Mobile Games,” which explored the link between the culture of violence and mobile games. The extemporaneous speaking category featured Sem. Dwayne Brix Briosos, who also earned third place by presenting a compelling argument on how globalization benefits only the wealthy. In the choral competition, the SJS Choir continued its winning streak for the sixth consecutive year, taking first place with "You Are There," arranged by Mr. Nikko Olivier Villanueva. Additionally, the Josephites defended their first-place title in the biblical rap competition with a performance interpreting Matthew 5:38-48, further showcasing their diverse talents and dedication to the festival's theme of forgiveness and peace. The Saint Joseph Seminary High School, Inc. successfully hosted the much-anticipated Knight of the Altar Convention on Saturday, January 20, 2024, under the theme "Serving at the Altar: Expression of Stewardship and Synodality", drawing in over a thousand participants from 38 delegations across the Diocese of Bangued. The convention commenced with the celebration of the Holy Mass presided over by Father Floro Bautista, the rector of the seminary. In his homily, Father Bautista emphasized the profound role of altar servers, highlighting their service not only to the priests but to Jesus Christ himself. Frt. Christan Joy Bides, in his address to the participants, stressed the importance of nurturing a spiritual life and a robust desire to serve. He encouraged the altar servers to strengthen their commitment to their calling and to foster a sense of community within the service of the Church. The event also featured a Festival of Talents, where participants showcased their extraordinary skills in dancing and singing, demonstrating the diverse talents within the church community. Not only did they bring their talents, they brought with them their culture and their stories. In the afternoon, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement as the participants engaged in various sports and games. The outdoor sports included basketball and volleyball, while indoor activities covered table tennis, pool, chess, game of the generals, dama, scrabble, and word factory. The games were not only a display of physical prowess but also an opportunity for building camaraderie and sportsmanship among the delegates. The Knight of the Altar Convention was more than just a day-long event; it was a celebration of service to the Church and a step towards building a stronger sense of synodality among the participants. The seminarians, formators, and faculty members of St. Joseph Seminary spent time for prayer and reflection during the Annual Lenten Recollection facilitated by Fr. Bryan H. Garibay. The recollection which began yesterday, April 3, 2023 and culminated in today’s mass, centered on the theme of “Coming Home” to God.
Fr. Garibay is a priest from the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia. He is currently taking up his Licentiate in Canon Law from the University of Santo Tomas. SJS bagged the Overall Champion Award at the 42nd Hearts on Fire: Abra Gospel Festival themed “Heeding to the Cry of Creation” on February 25, 2023, held at the Divine Word College of Bangued Gymnasium.
Songwriting Rev. Fr. Floro Bautista’s “Paginanaenkayo” won 2nd Place and Sem. Mark Rainniel M. Daguiomen’s “Dika Agbuten, Ipatpategka” won 3rd Place in the Songwriting Competition. Poster-Making Sem. Robert Lenroe A. Sierra placed 2nd in the poster-making competition with his entry entitled, “Heeding the Cry of Creation is rooted in the Care and Concern for Everyone”. Photography Seminarians swept all the places in the Photography Competition. For the second time around, Sem. Christian Gabriel B. Barbosa ranked first with his entry entitled “Irritatingly Beautiful”. Sem. Mark Rainniel M. Daguiomen’s “Hope through the Smoke” ranked second, while Sem. Yossef V. Flores’s Ziplock Coffin ranked third. Choral Competition The SJS Choir’s interpretation of Paginanaenkayo was awarded first prize in the Choral Competition, making the SJS Choir record its fifth consecutive win in this particular competition. Dance Drama The Josephites’ portrayal of “The Parable of the Tenants” also won first place in the Dance Drama Competition. Bible Quiz Bee The SJS Bible Quiz Bee Team ranked 3rd among the competitors. The team included Genesis Ace Velasquez (G10), Jan Erol Monde Bisares (G10), Cymhere Jesuah M. Valencia (G9), Lourde Yuri A. Tarinay (G9) and Yeshua Marius C. Collo (G7). The seminary's Senior High School Department held the First Philosophical Research Symposium on the " The State of the Truth in Socio-Politics", on February 17, 2023. Frt. Christian Plurad, the instructor for philosophical paper writing, delivered the keynote lecture on “Post-truth in Socio-Political Context”. The Grade 12 students who are taking up the course also presented their research papers. Seminarians Aron Jericho B. Cantil and Venice Jerdian T. Bringas talked about “Cronyism and Nepotism in Socio-Political Sphere in the Philippines”. Furthermore, seminarians Lil Ambrose Dimitri A. Badajos and Derick Nicola Babo M. Lumaang discussed “The Proliferation of fake news and Philippine Democracy.”
The said symposium which was held at the Saint Joseph Seminary’s Social Hall was participated by five Diocesan Schools namely: the Little Flower High School of Peñarrubia, Our Lady of Guadalupe High School of Lacub, Queen of Peace High School of Canan, Queen of Peace High School of La Paz, and the St. Mary High School of Pidigan. Rev. Fr. Pablito Tagura, SVD, of Class 1978, will be ordained bishop on Feb. 17, 2023 at the Christ the King Mission Seminary (CKMS) in Quezon City, by his eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, pro-prefect of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization.
Bishop-Elect Tagura was born in Tayum, Abra, on Jan. 15, 1962 but he grew up in Tagodtod, Lagangilang, Abra. He attended St. Joseph Seminary from 1974 through 1977. He pursued his priestly formation at the Christ the King Seminary and was ordained priest on Dec. 17, 1988. Pope Francis appointed him as the Bishop of the Vicariate of San Jose-Mindoro on December 17, 2022. He will be installed in his ecclesiastical office by Archbishop Charles Brown, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, on February 25. The seminarians attended a seminar-workshop today on Science Investigatory Project conducted by Mr. Robinson Q. Fabito, Associate Professor at the University of Abra. The program which was held at the seminary's Social Hall is part of the celebration of Math-Science Month themed “RESTORE: Response to the Cry of the Creation through Science and Technology”. Below is the first batch of applicants who passed the admission process conducted from January to May 2022. Applicants who will pass the succeeding tests will be added to the list.
